In 1904, Giacomo Puccini began preparations for Il Trittico, which finally premiered in New York in 1918. One-act operas such as Mascagni's Cavalleria rusticana and Leoncavallo's Pagliacci had become fashionable on opera stages at the turn of the century, and in his Trittico, Puccini combined three of them: a tragic, a sentimental, and a comic piece in one evening. Two of these short operas – Suor Angelica (the sentimental one) and Gianni Schicchi (the comic one), both with librettos by Giovacchino Forzano – are being staged as a double bill by vocal students from the HMTMH in the Richard Jakoby Hall. Death and family, the eternal themes, are at the center of their stories, but as always, it's not quite that simple. The families: deeply dysfunctional. Death: sometimes freely chosen, sometimes a cause for all kinds of intrigue. The university orchestra, conducted by Martin Brauß, will perform Ettore Panizza's abridged version. Roman Hovenbitzer is responsible for stage direction. Set design: Greta Löwe and Paula Preuschhof. Costumes: Luise Baum-Krüger, Helene Möller, and Anna Scholz. The production is a collaboration between the University of Music, Drama and Media Hannover and the Hannover Girls' Choir.
