The Department of Voice at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover

With a high-profile team of teachers, the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover is in a position to offer first-class training oriented to students’ individuality, founded on good teaching tradition and the knowledge offered by recent scientific and pedagogical research.

Our programmes offer practical training oriented to today’s professional world. The four-year programme leading to a Bachelor of Music/Voice provides a solid  foundation for continuing training with a broad spectrum of course offerings.

Two Master of Music programmes offer the opportunity for specialized study.

Students in the Master of Music/Voice for free-lance singers may choose between an artistic/pedagogical programme or a pedagogical/voice science programme. The artistic section of the programme offers the possibility of concentrating on the music of a specific period or style; the pedagogical/voice science programme requires research and publication as well as preparing students for a teaching career at university level and/or assuming leadership positions in cultural institutions.

The Master of Music/Opera programme concentrates on building the skills needed by singers in a solo career on the professional opera stage.

The heart of the voice department is the main building on Emmichplatz, a central location also housing many related programmes of study. The 500-seat Richard Jakoby Saal is equipped with staging and lighting equipment as well as an orchestra pit comparable to a medium-sized opera house, making one to three opera productions per year possible. The HMTMH also offers several chamber music halls, lecture rooms and a recording studio with up-to-date technical equipment including access to computer-supported voice analysis programmes.
